Public Health, MPH + City & Regional Planning, MCP

The dual degree program between the Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of City Planning (MCP) gives students broader exposure to issues that intersect health and the built environment, as well as with a broad range of valuable theory, methods, and applied learning opportunities. The multi-disciplinary approach provides graduates with the necessary knowledge to address the complexity of the environment as well as the depth of specific expertise in fields such as resource management, policy, and the urban environment. Students who complete the dual degree program will be uniquely suited to jobs in the private and public sectors involving planning, the built environment, and public health.

Completed individually outside the dual-degree program, the MPH requires 14 CUs and the MCP requires 18 CUs. Through this dual-degree program, the 14 CUs required for the MPH are earned by completing the 11 CUs of Public Health Requirements outlined below, plus counting CPLN 5010, CPLN 5030, and CPLN 6220 as MPH electives; the 18 CUs required for the MCP are earned by completing the 15 CUs of City Planning Requirements outlined below, plus counting any three PUBH courses as MCP General Electives.

The degree and major requirements displayed are intended as a guide for students entering in the Fall of 2026 and later. Students should consult with their academic program regarding final certifications and requirements for graduation.

Students may begin in either the MCP or MPH program. Year One and Year Two are interchangeable. Although it is recommended that students apply to both programs simultaneously, it is possible for students to apply to the second program while they are in the first year of either the MCP or MPH programs. However, deviating from the standard course of study outlined below could result in needing more than 26 CUs to complete the dual-degree.

Course of Study for the following MCP Concentrations:

  • Land Use and Environmental Planning
  • Public & Private Development
  • Smart Cities
  • Sustainable Transportation & Infrastructure

Students in these concentrations take 4 CUs of concentration courses and 2 CUs of CPLN electives of their choosing.

Dual-degree students split their time being "primary" to each degree program. Primary Program indicates which school is considered "home school" for the student in a given semester. Billing and fees are governed by the Home School's tuition policies. School-based scholarships are distributed only in semesters when the student's primary program is the program awarding the scholarship. Deviation from the standard course of study can impact a student's overall tuition costs.

MCP students can fulfill the degree requirements by completing either CPLN 5020 or CPLN 5090but the standard course of study outlines CPLN 5020 so as to avoid scheduling conflicts.
