GAS 6000 Academic Communication for International Graduate Students

This course is designed for international graduate students who are non-native speakers of English and want to improve their English fluency in academic communications. Intelligibility of speech, clarity of expression and active listening skills in a variety of academic, teaching, and professional situations (e.g. presenting material, responding to questions, directing discussions) are emphasized. The course includes instruction in oral academic discourse skills and prominent features of spoken English that promote successful communication for teaching, research presentations, and job talks. Priority is given to doctoral candidates, individuals who will be teaching assistants, and those who seek English fluency certification. Through this course, students will develop, and practice strategies to effectively use spoken language in university settings and for a variety of academic purposes.

GAS 6010 Proseminar in Graduate Studies

Graduate Arts and Sciences doctoral students may register for GAS 6010 as an introduction to the methods of graduate study and research. To be conducted by individual graduate group faculty.

GAS 6100 Research Paper Writing

For doctoral candidates who use English as a Second Language, this course explores expectations of academic writing at the graduate level as well as distinctive features of academic discourse and argumentation. Attention also is given to elements of formal written English such as grammar, clarity, conciseness, and coherence.

GAS 9930 Dissertation Internship

The Graduate Division of Arts and Sciences students may register for GAS9930 when awarded the opportunity to conduct research through specific programs to further their research interest. The GAS course allows a student to remain registered during the research and writing stages of the dissertation.

Two Term Class, Student may enter either term; credit given after both terms are complete

GAS 9940 Clinical Internship

The Graduate Division of Arts and Sciences doctoral students register for GAS9940 while participating in a clinical internship to as a part of their degree requirement. The GAS course allows the student to remain registered during the research and writing stages of the dissertation.

Two Term Class, Student may enter either term; credit given after both terms are complete

GAS 9960 Dissertation Research Abroad

The Graduate Division of Arts and Sciences doctoral students register for GAS9960 while studying abroad. The GAS course allows the student to remain registered during the research and writing stages of the dissertation. A student conducting dissertation research abroad in a given semester is eligible to register for Dissertation Research Abroad status.
